What’s better than sailing into the Barcelona sunset?

Ever thought of exploring new places by boat? If you dare to travel off-the-beaten-track while enjoying the sun and taking in nature’s elements, this might be your call. Going on a sailing trip in Barcelona opened up a whole new perspective for me.

Here are 6 reasons why you should discover Barcelona by boat:

  • What’s better than sailing into the sunset?

Barcelona almost always offers warm sunny weather and California lifestyle. Take in nature’s elements – it’ll be a great break from your travel routine.

  • Escape the tourist crowds.

It’s a great way to discover Barcelona off-the-beaten-tourist-track, to make friends with fellow travellers, and to meet the locals.

  • It couldn’t be more convenient with the marina being right in the city.

The nearest metro stop is not that far away to escape the bustling city. This also makes it very easy to end the sailing day with lovely tapas and Mediterranean food near the marina.

  • Get a different perspective.

  • Sail the Mediterranean.

Maybe you might even want to choose an overnight trip to the Balearic Islands or Costa Brava? Barcelona is just a few hours away from Costa Brava and within 1 day sailing to the Balearic Islands.

Barcelona is an established starting point to discover the Mediterranean Sea. But instead of going on a cruise, why not choose a less touristy but personal sailing trip in nice company? I sailed with Barcelona Balearics Sailing Association who are great hosts and put a lot of effort into making everyone feel part of the crew. They offer 3 hour and overnight sailing trips on a classic British sailing boat that has sailed many long distance passages in all oceans of the world.

Last minute tips

  • Take sunscreen and waterproofs. Be prepared for a temperature drop once the sun has gone down.
  • If you tend to get seasick: get a good night’s rest before, avoid alcohol and orange juice. I use those acupressure wristbands for motion sickness relief or take ginger tablets an hour before the trip. Sit back and fix your eyes on the horizon 😉

Have you been sailing in Barcelona? How was your experience?

I have been a traveller and expat for over 15 years. So far my nomad lifestyle has allowed me to live and work in seven countries including the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Australia. Moving country, studying abroad and a passion for travel has been part of most of my adult life.
